Marion shelter needs us!!!

I spoke to Tracie Bennett, volunteer at Marion Animal Shelter) and Carolyn Parks, manager of the Marion Animal Shelter. They said they are REALLY looking for fosters. BUT They are still going to start euthanizing at 2 PM today, May 26. though as they have over 40 dogs/puppies and are "overcrowded". (Most are on Petfinder.com). ALL NEED TO BE OUT BY 2PM TODAY. Tracie would be glad to tell perspective fosters about the dogs…her cell is 901-647-8267.

The number for the shelter is 870-739-5412 and they are located at 1001 L.H. Polk Street in Marion, not too far from Memphis. The shelter is located between "The Greens" apartment complex.

Tracie said there are more dogs than there are photos on Petfinders, including a newborn litter of Lab mix puppies, all of whom will be euthanized starting at 2 PM today. Carolyn Parks said there are some dogs who have been there for four months and it is time for them to be euthanized anyway. This is their words, not mine.

Sophia, the puppy, needs a special family!

This is Sophia ~ a 13 week old American Pit Bull Terrier puppy who needs a new home. She is deaf, perfectly healthy, up to date on puppy vaccines and cute as could be with her floppy ears and bright blue eyes.

She is almost house broken, crate trained, will be your little shadow, learning hand commands - she is easy to train because she is incredibly smart, good with other dogs. She needs to be placed in a loving home with an experienced dog owner. Because she is deaf, she will need special care and attention. Please let me know if anyone is interested. She is a love bug, and needs somebody to love her in return :0)

A beautiful pit bull has been found by two Guardian Angels who are taking care of him. The dog was found near Perkins and Dee in Memphis. Attached are photographs.

The dog is un-neutered and has blood in his stool. He was found caught on a crepe myrtle tree because of the long chain he's attached to. I hope I am not sounding too presumptuous by saying this but it does not sound as if he comes from a loving environment where the dog's medical needs were taken care of.

He's a male, young but full grown. Tan & white, very healthy. No marks or signs of neglect or abuse. My wife scanned him, but he's not micro-chipped; no tags of any kind. Wide, thin brown collar adorned with small spikes. Clipped ears, long tail. Approx. 40 lbs.

A friend of ours found him at Perkins & Dee with an unusually long chain with large clips on each end. The chain had gotten wrapped around a Crepe Mertle tree.
He's very frightened, and he does growl & bark some. But he warms up enough to be petted and leashed; though still skiddish. He has blood in his stool.

He's no longer in the kennel which you see in the picture. We kept him in it for about 4 hours last night, and now he's in our back yard. We have 4 dogs, though, so we have to be very careful to take him out front on a leash while they go out for a few minutes. So, because of the size of our home and the possibility of dog aggression (and he's not neutered), it's problematic for us to keep him much longer.

ANF is the architect of the new Memphis animal shelter. The stamp set features photographs of real shelter pets, and the USPS has anticipated its popularity by printing 300 million stamps.

Barbara Standing, director of development of Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services, hopes the stamp will draw attention to pet overpopulation as well as the need for more adoptions. She says,” This is a banner event for animal lovers and stamp enthusiasts—we’re hoping many of both will come out. The event is free and open to the public, and the USPS will be there with its mobile post office ready to sell the animal themed stamps and other commemorative items." The stamps are expected to sell out quickly nationwide.

To assist with the official stamp unveiling will be new shelter administrator Matthew Pepper. To emphasize the importance of the commemorative stamp, Memphis Animal Services will also be on hand with some pets ready for adoption. Representatives of Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services will be available to discuss affordable and often free spay and neuter options as the humane solution to overcrowding at our shelters and animal rescue groups.

Dumped in front of my house. I have been in rescue many years. I have never had a pit to find a home for. I want to be so careful about placing him. He shows no aggression. Even when my personal dogs (which one doesn't play well with others) goes around him, he just strolls away without a care. Shows no signs of scars. Eats his meals like it will be his last. I feed him four small meals a day. I have had him since last Tuesday. I want to find the perfect FOREVER home. I will help with cost.

DON'T FORGET! Please come on down to the big Tunica Humane Society Yard Sale on Sat. May 8 at First Congregational Church, 1000 S. Cooper, Memphis. We will be there from 8 AM to 3 PM.

This is a fundraiser to help the homeless and stray animals of Tunica County have a roof over their heads when it's cold and raining. Right now, they are staying in outdoor kennels and sometimes huddling together in a dog house when the weather is in the single digits (like this past winter) isn't good enough.

PAWS Sanctuary Destroyed by Flooding
Urgent Fosters Needed for Displaced Dogs

Many of you may have read the national news stories like this one about record flooding and devastating damage to the state of Tennessee this weekend. PAWS has been hit particularly hard by this natural disaster as our sanctuary is currently under five feet of water. Thanks to the incredible rescue efforts of PAWS volunteers, no dogs were lost in this storm. Volunteers bravely waded into white-capping flooded areas and removed dogs clinging to dog houses and destroyed pieces of wooden fence. As our sanctuary is currently only accessible by boat, volunteers have moved all dogs into a large home and created a temporary shelter until the waters recede. Thankfully, there is plenty of food and water and per this morning's report- everyone is in good spirits. All other Memphis area volunteers and dogs are safe and accounted for. PAWS is closely monitoring the situation at Tipton County Animal Control as Brighton, TN has been particularly hard hit by these storms. The pound has miraculously remained dry so far- but more rain and more flooding are expected today. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully and are ready to mobilize a national rescue effort if necessary.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Right now, it is impossible to begin to assess the damage. We are focusing our efforts on placing as many dogs currently at our sanctuary in to foster homes. We currently have 43 dogs in need of foster. Dogs of every breed, size, and age are in need of help. We are reaching out to you in hopes that you may be able to open your home to one of these flood refugees. If you would like to volunteer or get more information about fostering, please email Kelly Parker at kesalerno@gmail.com.

I CAN'T FOSTER, BUT I STILL WANT TO HELP

If you can't foster, here are a few things you can do to help:

Summit needs a family

Summit is my foster child. She is approximately 9 months old and now weights 18 #s. I actually thought she was around 14 #s because she is so small. We have had Summit living with us for 2.5 weeks.

I can now give an assessment on her personality. She a precious lovable girl filled with lots of energy.
The ideal home would be a large yard for running and another good natured dog that loves to play.

She is kennel trained. We are rarely using the kennel now because she loves to go outside.

She is child friendly, very smart. Summit learned the dogie door on her own and with a few scoldings does not get into our 3 fur babies bowls at feeding time (we feed 2 times a day). She really wants to be a lap girl.

She was thrown out of a car when she just a little thing and the car behind ran over her. Tri County paid for her surgery. She lived in a kennel for 2-3 months while healing. She is now in perfect shape.

Her adoption fee is $100.00. You are welcome to drive to Bartlett to meet her or I will be taking her to the Southaven Petco adoption day Saturday at 12:30.

Miss Daisey is a 4 year old Chihuahua/MinPin mix and is more than ready for a forever home! When her elderly owner had to be put in a nursing home she and her “sister” Minnie ended up at a local shelter. Both girls only weigh about 4-5 pounds and were scared to death!

Daisy is UTD on all vax, heartworm prevention and spayed. She loves to just sit in your lap and be a true companion! She would do best in a home with no small children because of her tiny little size. J

The Marion Animal Shelter in Marion, AR (10 minutes from Memphis TN) is full. It has gorgeous pups in URGENT need of rescue - including many purebreeds (Saint Bernard, Doberman, 13-inch Beagle, Tri-Colored Cocker, Gorgeous Rottie, Yellow Lab, Shih-Tzu, German Short Hair Pointer, Malinois pups, Golden x pup, etc...).

Of course, there are many Pitties as well and some cute mixed breeds puppies - all need saving - so please consider rescuing a dog that may not have a chance otherwise....

Henri needs a family!

Please see attached with information and photo about a Toy Poodle named Henri. This baby has been through a lot in his short life. He is about 2 years old. He is white with apricot markings. His tail is completely apricot.

His owner moved away and left him locked in the apartment. When the maintenance man went in to check things he found Henri. He was very hungry and scared to say the least!

Henri was taken to a local shelter before being rescued.

Yesterday I was on my way home from my parents house and was stopped at the light on Austin Peay at Yale Road. There is a boarded up building there (used to be Seesel's) and it is fenced in. I noticed there was a medium size brown dog INSIDE the fenced in area. I tried to get my husband to stop but he rationalized that the dog might have been put there to "guard" the building. I doubt that is the case but don't live in the area to go and check on the dog. Do you mind seeing if one of your contacts lives in the Raliegh area and can drive by and see if the dog looks healthy and has shelter???? I have a bad feeling that he was dumped in there. It appeared to me that he was pacing around the perimeter trying to find a way out. I wasn't close enough to see if he looked healthy or not.

There is a 9-10 week old Border Collar Puppy at the Desoto Shelter in dire need of going to the vet. She was covered with fleas and ticks when she was picked up. Now she has scabs and sores and a runny nose. The shelter is treating her with doxycyclin and penicillin. She needs to go to the vet. The shelter can not do much more for her. These puppies were due to be euthanized yesterday at the Memphis Animal shelter.
Due to legal reasons, puppies cannot be adopted out unless they are at least 6 weeks old or 3 pounds.

Theses little ones are neither. We agreed to foster them for 2 weeks until they can be adopted. These puppies are beautiful and precious. I am going to try my best to find them a forever home before my 2 weeks is up. If you are anyone you know is interested in adopting one of these sweet little souls please give me or Julie a call.

PLEASE, PLEASE help us help Ellie! Attached are pictures of Ellie, a shepherd(?)/pit mix. She is about 12 months old. In February, Ellie found some joggers in her neighborhood and decided she needed to jog right along with them. One of the joggers took her in just for the day and contacted a few rescues to try to get them to take her instead of taking her to the Memphis Animal Shelter. Brian fell in love with her freckled ears and we took her in on behalf of Guardian Angel Pet Rescue (GAPR). GAPR has gotten her vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and heartworm tested. (She's negative and on prevention.) She is crate trained, housebroken, and even doggie-door trained. She hardly sheds at all and has behaved exceptionally well at adoption events.

She got along GREAT with everybody – all people and all 10 other doggie campers for about a month. But for about the past two weeks, she has slowly showed escalating signs of aggression toward our Boxer, Chili. There is no doubt that Chili is the matriarch and leader of our personal dogs and Ellie is challenging Chili’s position in the pecking order. Wednesday night she really got into it with Chili. Chili went to the vet yesterday morning to have her wounds seen to. Our vet said Ellie had meant business when she fought Chili and the two should never be together again because Chili would likely not fare as well if there is a next time. I asked him to tell me frankly if Ellie should be put to sleep. ….and frankly, he said “NO”. He explained it is unusual for dogs like Ellie to also be ugly toward people, but she would have to be an only dog in foster care or in her furever home. As you all know, this is a very tough sell……

Ellie is loving, playful, silly, fun, and sweet (to everyone except Chili). She is an absolute dream with our other 9, more submissive, dogs. She is even sweet and sensitive to our Lhasapoo when she gets cranky and doesn’t want to play. We have loved and cared for Ellie for quite a while, but we will not leave Chili in danger. We do not want to have Ellie put to sleep, but if we can’t find a suitable alternative for her, we will be forced to do so and this possibility is gut-wrenching! PLEASE, PLEASE rack your brains, CROSS-POST, and/or offer some guidance on alternatives for this little girl. Despite all the love, time, attention, and training we’ve devoted to her, we absolutely have to find another place for her or have her euthanized. Please contact me with any help or ideas. I will transport her to the moon and back. I will trade at least one - probably more - dogs anyone else is currently fostering if someone might take our troubled child. I don’t care if your foster is/or are currently sick, pregnant, or heartworm positive. Please consider helping us help Ellie because we are rapidly running out of options for our fur baby……

Missing dogs in Southaven!

I have had a pack of wild dogs showing up on my property for a few days..they run the creek and then disappear. It has been driving my dogs crazy when they show up so I have put them in their pens when this happens. Two of my fosters, Callie and Josey, managed to dig out and are missing. They may have tried to go after these dogs. This happened about 11 this morning. I live in the Northcreek Area of Southaven. Both girls are shy, but Josey is the most skiddish. Callie is tri-colored, about 52 lbs and Josey has the markings of a Dobie/ cattle dog mix., black with brown brows and markings. She weighs about the same as Callie.
Please let me know if anyone sees these girls.They would be running in the Hwy 301, Stateline Rd HornLake Rd area.

Johnny the Jack Russel needs a family!

This cute little dogs name is Johnny. He was pulled from a high kill shelter when his time was almost up. He was adopted within an hour of getting pulled. He had been in the shelter since 2-19 along with his companion which I adopted.
However things are not working out with Johnny’s new home and sadly she must find a rescue or forever home that will take him.

Johnny is a Jack Russell Terrier mix who is about 1.5 years old. His new owner had him vetted at Forrest Hill Animal Clinic. He is very well behaved, knows commands and gets along with other dogs and cats and kids. (The one I have…Lexi, loves to sleep under the covers in the bed) Johnny loves to sleep in the bed too. I was just at the shelter and saw the conditions the puppies are "living" in. I have already told Anne that I would get them. I have taken in four 7 week old pups this week that were born alongside a mudy creek, a Boston that ran out in front of my car, a 10 mth old Pug with a punctured lung, cracked rib and a broken pelvis that they owner wanted PTS due to medical costs that was at Open Arms , ( this is with a friend being fostered), an Aussie owner /surrender ( fostered by owner) and a GS mix that is HW positive that had been living at the Southaven Animal Shelter for the past year.

I am not super-woman, and 8 additional fosters under my care is alot..but there are so, so many that need our help. as a rescue group we need as many fosters as possible...even if they foster just one! I am very blessed to have a wonderful family that helps and supports this worthy cause. Yes its work...alot of work! But thats a given....taking care of any living thing is work, then adding the fact that many of these poor creatures have medical issues is just that much harder.

Here is what I am asking: If anyone has room and can take just one of my other fosters, someone with just maybe one other dog, then that opens up the needed time to tend to these pups and injured animals. I currently have some that need to stay with me due to various medical reasons ( Gracie, demo mange Stella, HW treatment Frankie, recovering from surgery on tumor removal). I have others that are adult fosters, no medical problems, that would love to have more one on one attention.

If anyone can take one please let me know...if not I understand.

Ohio resident Luanne Baker came home one evening and called to her dog Sunshine. But after repeated calls, and no sign of the Cocker Spaniel, Luanne went looking for her.

It turned out Sunshine had been trying to get up and make her way to Luanne, but she couldn't. The dog had been beaten within inches of her life. Sunshine suffered broken bones, a punctured lung, and head trauma. The attack was so violent, the dog's heart had become separated from the sternum. The perpetrator? Luanne's boyfriend. He was jealous of the attention Luanne gave Sunshine.

Amazingly, Sunshine survived her injuries and is on her way to complete recovery. But the incident did have a lasting impact: Luanne teamed up with the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) in an effort to garner more rights--and protection--for victimized animals.

Today, ALDF announces the launch of its Expose Animal Abusers campaign. The idea is to establish a nationwide animal abuser registry--a public list in each state of anyone convicted of felony animal abuse (including torture, sexual abuse, animal fighting, and neglect). The goal? To prevent "repeat offenses from anyone with an established history of abusing animals."

Legislative bills attempting to create statewide registries have been introduced in the past in Rhode Island, Colorado, and Tennessee. So far, none have passed. Friday in California, however, a bill for a such a registry was introduced by State Senator Dean Florez.

"We operate shelters in the hopes of giving abandoned pets a second chance at a loving home, not subjecting them to lives of continued abuse and neglect," Florez said. "A registry of abusers would help ensure animals are not being adopted out to convicted abusers, end the cycle of abuse and increase the likelihood of finding these pets the forever home they deserve."

With its Expose Animal Abusers campaign, the ALDF hopes to take the movement even further by turning it into a national registry. And through the website, citizens around the country can urge their lawmakers to enact such legislation in their own state. Public officials are often eager to support such bills, pointing to the strong correlation between the animal abuse and violence toward people.

"But it's not just about how animal abusers end up also hurting or killing humans," said ALDF Executive Stephen Wells. "It should be motivation enough to protect our animals from repeat offenders--and any abuse of any kind."

Here at Dogtime, we couldn't agree more. With torture, neglect, and killing still receiving unbelievably light sentences in many states, abusers can go on to commit more and more acts of violence. Thanks to Luanne Baker, Dean Florez, and Stephen Wells of the ALDF--not for long.

Sweet female pit mix needs a family-ASAP!

Here is the puppy found on Quince about to get hit today by the park :( My apartment complex has banned pitbulls! I have somewhere for her to stay tonight and tomorrow night but after that I hate to think about that shelter! I can make a donation of 200 dollars for whoever can find it in their heart and schedule to foster her.
Of course I'm looking for an owner but not getting my hopes up - no collar either...

She is beautiful! and shy at first but, well let me say this - in the car she curled up and took a nap and snuggled with me. Loves to smell your face and give kisses and stare right into your eyes - and hers are Gorgeous!!

I'm already attached :( and I will do everything I can to find her a safe place and a chance for a loving life - she was trying to eat out of a gutter when I found her!

Button needs a family!

I received an email about Button, but I don't have any photos and the video wouldn't load. Button came to Animal Emergency Center with parvo and the owner couldn't afford to treat her. The vet gave her treatment, and is going to spay her..now all she needs is a home!

I do not know what breed, but I do know Button is a female puppy! Can you stop by and take a photo of her or maybe adopt her? I bet she wants to give some kisses!

They were found wandering the streets of Frayser a few months ago and now their foster parents are moving and need to find the dogs a forever home. I am trying to help my dad and little sister find a home for these 3 very sweet teen-aged puppies. My sister rescued them from being euthanized at the pound, but can't keep them. She has been trying to adopt them out for a little while, but with no luck..... The bad news is this - my dad & sis are about to move, and the puppies can't go to the new house, so they have to find a home within the next 2 weeks!!!!!!!

They appear to be some type of maybe lab mix breed?... look very slim & trim.... have short hair and floppy ears... I have met the pups, & they are very sweet and affectionate... Two of them appear to be brother & sister, and the 3rd looks similar & is about the same age, but doesn't seem to be related to the other two. They were found wandering in a parking lot in Frayser.

Lucy & two cats need a family! owner died :(

This just makes me so sad, I have wondered what would happen to my pets if something happened to me or my family. Unfortunately, Lucy's owner did pass away, and now she is in need of a new family. Can you help Lucy or the two cats?

Lucy is about 85 lbs...4 years old...spayed...heartworm free and good on shots until August. She is staying in Pam's home for the time being--all alone--though, Randy, Pam's boyfriend, feeds and walks her. Lucy is said to be half boxer and may be, according to Cathy the trainer at Dog's Rule, a bit pit and more hound (her tri-color). She has a dog door and likes to spend her day in a chair in front of street side window from which she can guard her home. To me, Lucy is a great dog. She loves to ride in the car and could be an excellent companion for someone. She's a bit defensive with strange dogs--so she probably will be happiest in a home alone or with another smaller male. She's also especially bright--learns quickly (we went to classes at Dog's Rule) and seems to enjoy obedience work.

Two of the cats have found themselves new homes on the street. Left are a male and female, both black. The male is not that friendly, but Thumbaleena, the female, is ever so sweet, stays on the porch and would just love someone's lap. They basically live outdoors and sleep in the basement. Wilbur (the male) probably can be domesticated again. They've just been on their own for some time now.

I have a friend that has a few foster dogs that have turned into pets. She is desperately trying to get these dogs new homes, so that is where y'all come in!
Noelle is a German Shepard mix, she is about 3 years old, and is utd on shots. Currently, Noelle is going through heartworm treatment, but will be finished soon! I have been working with Noelle, teaching her commands and how to walk on a leash...she is so smart! We interact with children at the park and she currently lives with dogs and cats. We are not sure about how much she loves cats, that would have to be tested upon adoption :)

Sandy Williams, Executive Director of the Tunica Humane Society, has found some property and a facility which can someday house her dogs! As you know, all the dogs that Sandy and her staff have rescued are kept in outdoor kennels. Without the help of wonderful people such as YOU, they would not have made it through the winter! Your generosity has truly been overwhelming. I have received donations of dog houses, dog beds, dog food, dog toys, blankets, towels and much more. Some of you have personally visited the dogs and brought your own donated items and for this, Sandy is forever grateful. Some of you have even adopted one or more of her dogs. Thank you!!!

It's going to take about $120,000 for Sandy to complete this purchase. I am trying to think of a way to help Sandy with this purchase and I wanted to share an idea with you. On March 13, Sam's Town Casino and 98.9 Kim-FM Radio in Memphis is hosting "the world's largest coin toss" beginning at 7 PM. I know everyone is as excited as I am about the new director of Memphis Animal Services; Matthew Pepper! I hope he can do what it takes to turn the shelter around for the better.

Some people get annoyed by us activists and our persistence, but what the don't realize is how connected we are. Those who fight for the animals are connected with those that fight for the children, as are those who fight against gangs. We are all connected, these elements are all connected. I have lived in this city my entire life, and after attending city schools and working with inner city missions for quite a few years... I get it. I just hope everyone is able to keep checking the blog and forwarding what they can or making calls to whoever. I know people try to push us around by saying "enough about the shelter, what about ..blah blah"- we cannot accept that! Look how far we have come!!

I went to Memphis Animal Services today to sign for the two dogs that were pictured chained to that awful dog house and confiscated over the weekend. i'm picking them up tomorrow, and i'm going to have them boarded somewhere for a couple weeks to make sure they haven't contracted anything from the shelter. during this time, i'll be visiting, assessing, and socializing them both to determine their demeanor in various situations and adoptability.

they both seemed very sweet although quite afraid (for good reason). they both were kenneled with 2 other dogs each, so seemed to do fine with other dogs- always a great sign. they showed absolutely no aggression. i have a strong feeling these are going to be 2 VERY special dogs... so stay tuned... please forgive the attached photos, it's dark in the shelter and my flash wasn't working very well.

what you can do to help:

* PRAY for their health, rehab, and most importantly finding a great forever home!

Chained dog taken in at mas- due out 3/2

I will update with photos tonight! It is the dog from the craigslist ad!

This poor, emotionally crushed beige and white pit bull was picked up by animal control officers on animal cruelty charges and is now at the Memphis Animal Shelter. We are trying to find a good home for this little one. There is also a second black and white pit bull that was picked up at the same home who we also intend to rescue. Can you please help to foster or rescue either of these two dogs. They are due out March 3 and we are desperate to save their lives and show them a brighter side of life, something it's unlikely they've ever experienced.

Here's the info on Junebug! Thanks for any help on finding her a forever home!

She's about 2 or 3 years old, 60 lb, spayed female. Very sweet and very, very active. I would take her home with me, but I just don't have enough time to take with a dog that should be able to go on daily runs. But gosh she does so well with my 6 year old labrador, Jake. Initially she was sent to us to be euthanized because she was supposedly dog aggressive, but I let her out with Jake, and a couple of my co-workers dogs and Juebug just wanted to play. Needless to say, we couldn't euthanize her. She is also ok with children, but might be best suited to a home with older kids simply because she's so rambunctious that she might unintentionally push over a smaller child. I could definitely see her in a home with older boys who run around all the time, or someone who is willing to train her to be a running companion. Man is she fast and never seems to get tired! We let her out as much as possible here at the clinic, but it just isn't enough. She's so bored that it's pitiful to see. If anyone is interested they can call Greene Animal hospital at 452-3171 to meet her. We've spayed her and given her all her shots. All someone needs to do is fill out an adoption application and we ask a small donation to the stray animal account so that we are able to continue taking in animals that would otherwise be left on the streets or put into shelters but we might make an exception for the right home since we are so desperate to see her happy. Thank you so, SO much for passing this on.

3 Cockers need a home!

This afternoon I spoke with Ann McClain, inside director at the Horn Lake Animal Shelter. Ann tells me that she has received a call from an elderly woman in Horn Lake who has to surrender her 3 purebred cockers to the shelter. These dogs are all 3 unspayed females that are current on their vaccinations and hw negative. We are trying to prevent these dogs from entering the shelter where they will be offered for adoption at standard fee of $10, and then the people who get them will either breed the dogs, or they will probably sell the cockers to breeders.

DARS is overcapacity right now with 60+ dogs and puppies in our system and cannot take in any more, but I am sending this onto each of you in the hope that some of you can respond to this plea.

If so, please call Ann McClain ASAP at 662/393-5857. I know the shelter closed today(Wednesday) at 3:00, but it will reopen on Thursday at 7:00 AM.

A dog has been in my area for about one+ weeks. The mail carrier asked me about one he has been leaving food for. The area and dog he described fit the one I saw again today.

This afternoon, someone in a van looked to be following her (maybe trying to catch) and she kept going. I went around and down Waring just north of Tutwiler, tried to cut her off by pulling in a driveway and she crossed Waring to avoid me. You know the scenario..afraid they will run out in traffic trying to get away from you.

I believe she is pregnant. She looks really swollen around the abdomen. Humane Society reception person says they can't help and tried to refer me to Animal Services which I won't call.
Laurie said she used a trap to catch a dog recently. I have used a cat trap but have never considered one for a dog. Would not want to leave one 4 streets away where I think she hangs out some.

I'm not sure when the dog might come back down my street to put one in my front yard. Could anyone help? Give suggestions? Please forward if you know someone else who might offer some assistance.

People in this area (Berclair) tend to call animal control and I really don't want that to happen.

Pepper will come to Memphis, leaving his current position as director of Caddo Parish Services in Shreveport, LA, where he is responsible for overall operations of Animal Services. He has a career and experience in Animal Welfare and Control that spans 13 years.

With the current financial situation not looking any better in the near future, we thought we would give dog owners some easy and effective ways to save money.

Here are some tips...

1. Get Healthy . Pet health should be taken seriously. Just like humans, your dog needs exercise to stay fit. There isn't a 'magic pill' that can replace preventive medicine, but you can provide healthy exercise for your pets just by play with them. Go outside and take your favorite 4-legged friend for a walk. This will help both you and your dog, and it doesn't cost a thing.

2. Brush . Get a doggy toothbrush and brush your dog's teeth. This is a simple and effective way to keep your dog's overall health on the up and up. It also helps prevent tartar build up and gum disease, such as gingivitis. Our favorite doggy toothbrush and toothpaste set is the Kissable - 3D toothbrush and toothpaste.

3. Wash, Wash, Wash. Bathe your dog with pet shampoo and make sure you rinse thoroughly. You want to make sure you use a pet approved shampoo because it will lessen the chance of developing an allergic reaction. It is also very important to rinse your dog thoroughly because if you don't, the suds left behind can cause itchy irritating dry skin. I recommend using the Rapid Bath, which makes this task a treat.

4. Get a Short Doo . If you take your dog to the groomer ask them to cut your dog's hair shorter. This will decrease the number of times you need to get your dog groomed, and it will help keep your pet cooler during the summer months. You can also trim your dog's nails at home instead of going to the vet or groomer. We recommend the using a nail grinder. It's a fast and easy way to trim your dog's nail safely and effectively.

5. Feed Right . Next, check how much food you feed against what is recommended by the manufacture and your veterinarian. You could be feeding your dog too much and that can be a problem - you could be creating an overweight dog and your food will not last as long as it could by just feeding the recommended amount. Also remember to comparison shop. Just because you have bought your food at the same store for years doesn't mean they have the best price. Check the food manufactures and pet stores websites often because they will often email you special promotions and coupons if you sign up for their free newsletter. In addition to their discounts, you can usually find coupons in your local paper for numerous pet food brands.

6. Yearly Exam . This is an important one. Take your dog in for a yearly physical exam. The earlier you can catch any sign of disease the better. The vet will also be able to inform you about your dog's overall health and give the appropriate vaccinations. Before choosing a vet, call around your area and ask different offices how much they charge. You may be surprised at how much different offices charge for the same services. Some offices even offer special discounts to new clients, and clients that are in a difficult financial situation. You can also ask your friends for offices that they recommend. Remember to be on the lookout for discount vaccination days with your local county office and pet stores. At these discount days you can get your yearly vaccinations and rabies shots for a fraction of the normal cost.

7. Multi-use Toys. Finally, look for good quality multi-use pet toys. Look for toys that are long lasting so you don't need to replace them often. Here are some of my favorite toys that deliver plenty of quality play for the money. I hope you enjoy them.

• GoDog Dragon - This adorable lime green dragon is a lot of fun, but best of all, he's tough! He's made with Chew Guard™ Technology, which means he made to withstand your dog's active play.

• Zogoflex TUX - The TUX toy is made with super-strong Zogoflex, a safe rubber-like material that really holds up to your dog's teeth. It has an unusual shape that makes it easy for your dog to pick it up and carry it around in his mouth. It's fun to toss and fetch, and even more fun to hide treats inside for your dog to find as he plays.

• Humunga-Tounge - This is one of the craziest toys we've ever seen! It's a super-long cartoon tongue on one end and a rubber ball on the other. So, when your dog holds the ball in his mouth, it looks like he has a huge tongue! This toy is fun for your dog to carry, retrieve and tug ... and it's also a hoot for you to watch. You can hide treats inside the ball for your dog to find as he plays. Or, forget the treats and simply enjoy a good game of toss and fetch. Here's another great idea. In the summer, you can put treats inside the ball, dip the ball in water and freeze it until it's solid. Then, give it to your dog to play with outside and let him enjoy the cool refreshing water and yummy treats as it thaws.

Bark in the Park!!! February 6th

I just wanted to remind you that the first bark in the Park of 2010 is this Saturday February 6th. The walk will begin at 10 am at Central Park in Southaven MS and will end at 12 noon. The walk will be canceled if it is raining. Please take the time to read through the rules posted below. We will have T-shirts available for sale at the walk.

Rules for Bark in the Park

1. All owners are accountable and responsible for their actions and their dogs behavior at ALL times.

2. Walks start promptly so please be on time.

3. NO human aggressive dogs or dog aggressive humans ( get it?)

4. Always keep your dog leashed and use leashes / collars of sturdy quality material. No retractable leashes. Spike collars, pinch collars and choke collars are strongly discouraged.

5. All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations and must be wearing a rabies tag.

6. Clean up after your dog.

7. Anyone soliciting breeding or illegal dog fighting will not be tolerated and will be asked to leave!

Please keep in mind that every park we meet at has a leash law, and it has to be enforced 100% of the time

Dog massages? Sure, why not? Massage is thought to be beneficial to dogs and may increase flexibility, encourage a better sense of wellness and calmness, reduce pain and increase circulation.

There are various techniques you can use, including stroking, passive movement, gentle stretching and kneading.

A properly performed massage can help release pent up stress and negative energy, resulting in a calm and more peaceful pet.

The sensation of simple touch of the fur (skin) and the manipulation of muscles has been shown to enhance the human animal bond, and sometimes even establish it. For the inactive and older pet, as well for the young or working pet, the owner can provide a gentle comforting touch. This helps provide security and calmness and will aid in relieving stress. The benefits from massage are many:

Increased flexibility
A general sense of wellness
Reduction of pain
Increased circulation
Calmness

Massage should always be a calming and gentle activity. Here are some tips to get you started:

Before you begin, make sure your dog is in a comfortable and quiet place. A table, the floor or even the couch are good places. The area should be padded and clean, and have plenty of fresh water available. This will allow the pet to receive the most benefit from the massage.
The most important part of a massage is relaxation. Soft music or soothing sounds will quiet many pets. We have good results with the Music My Pet CD.
Do not force your pet to submit to a massage if he really isn't interested. As with anything else, there may be times when massage does not help.
A couple of basic techniques that you can use at home include effleurage and passive touch. These are applied only three times during each session.
Effleurage - Effleurage is a gentle long stroke, which helps to warm the tissue. The amount of pressure applied to the animal is about 5 grams to a pound. This is a very, very light touch. One hand is on the pet at all times, while the other hand slowly slides down over the face, head, body, tail and outside of the legs. Make sure to go in the direction of the hair growth. Next, gently stroke up the inside of the legs, against the hair growth. With hand-over-hand effleurage one hand starts a stroke as the other hand ends a stroke. This leaves one hand connected to the animal at all times. Centripetal effleurage is a circle motion toward the heart. Be careful not to pull the hair.
Passive Touch - When passive touch is applied it is done with no pressure at all. Your hand is held on a muscle group only. A hand is held on the head, shoulder, along the side or the thigh and hip. This is done for a few moments. It will produce calmness, and help to relieve some pain. Your pet will be comforted by this weightless touch. Passive touch can be done anytime, while watching television or while out on a walk
Another easy technique is using a massage tool like the Rubby Buddy. The Rubby Buddy is a massage tool that allows you to spend time with your dog and give him a massage that increases his circulation and makes him feel good! It makes giving a massage easy and fun. One of our staff veterinarians, Karin Szust, tested it on her dogs and they LOVED it

One more tip - whatever technique you use, make sure that you do not touch areas of infection, open wounds or lumps.I hope you enjoy these massage tips.

3-year-old male Jack Russell is still at Memphis Animal Services, ID #205081. His intake date was 1/7 and his release date was 1/9. He is in the observation area, cage #OBV11.

A friendly 1-year-old mix who is described as a Papillon, female, in cage #534, ID #204667, intake date 12/26, release date 12/31. If anyone is interested in adopting her, they should hurry; she is way past her due out date. If someone adopts this little one, a benefactor said they would pay the $75 fee.

Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that wears away the smooth joint cartilage, causing the exposed raw bone surfaces to rub together. This results in an ongoing degeneration of the joint, pain and impaired mobility.

This painful disease will affect 20 percent of dogs. Dogs of any age or breed can get arthritis, but there are certain risk factors that increase a dog's chances of getting the disease. Do you know what they are?

Veterinarians at Novartis Animal Health recognize these 5 common risk factors for arthritis:

Genetic predisposition. Certain breeds have a much higher risk of contracting this disease simply because of their gene pool. Up to 70 percent of dogs in these breeds will be affected by canine arthritis. These breeds include Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.
Obesity. Studies show that, on average, obese dogs are likely to develop osteoarthritis 3 years earlier than lean dogs.
Joint abnormalities . Joint conditions such as canine hip dysplasia (the leading cause of lameness in dogs) put excessive stress on a dog's joints. This can increase a dog's risk of developing osteoarthritis.
Joint stress and trauma. Getting hit by a car can lead to arthritis. Injuries that damage ligaments, tissues or bones increase a dog's risk of developing osteoarthritis. Dogs that put repeated stress on their joints through high activity and demanding activities are also more likely to develop the disease.
Infection . Various bacterial, viral and fungal infections create conditions that can affect joints and contribute to arthritis. These include Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can be carried by ticks.

So how do you know if your dog has arthritis? Pay attention.

Arthritis causes a dog to become less active. He has trouble getting up or lying down. He is reluctant to do stairs or he becomes lame. Some dogs may simply slow down and become more reluctant to do the things they used to do. These are all signs that your dog is experiencing joint pain.

If you think your dog is in pain, see your veterinarian. Your vet can diagnose the disease and treat it with various medical and surgical treatments, depending on your unique situation. Considerations include your dog's age, the severity of the disease and your financial situation. Diet, exercise and anti-inflammatory pain control medications can also help. Many vets also recommend natural holistic remedies that support strong healthy joints.

NEW YORK, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), under the authority and request of the city of Clarksdale, Miss., has dispatched its field investigations and response team to assist in the removal of more than 400 dogs and cats from a local animal shelter.

ASPCA responders arrived early Sunday morning and are leading the effort to remove and transport animals from the City of Clarksdale Animal Shelter. The ASPCA is also working with local authorities to establish a temporary shelter for the animals, which include 40 cats and approximately 320 small and large-breed dogs.

Tim Rickey, the ASPCA's Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response, said many of the animals appear to be healthy, but some have medical conditions, including mange, as well as injuries and bite wounds from living in communal, overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

"What we've found are more than 400 animals living in a space designed for about 60," Rickey said. "Our goal is to export as many of the animals as possible to other agencies where they can be placed up for adoption."

The ASPCA team will begin removing animals once an emergency shelter site has been established. While the ASPCA is the only national organization on the scene, other agencies assisting in the operation include: In Defense of Animals: Mississippi Animal Rescue League, which is providing volunteers to care for animals; Mississippi Animal Response Team, which is providing crates and supplies for the temporary shelter; and four local veterinarians: Dr. Andrea Marble, Animal Medical Clinic; Dr. Jody Swartzfarger, Lawndale Pet Hospital; Dr. Wayne Adams, Adams Vet Clinic; and Dr. Isis Johnson Brown. The Atlanta Humane Society is transporting at least 100 animals to Georgia, where they will eventually be made available for adoption.

"We are making sure that the animals' immediate needs are being met, and all animals are being evaluated by a veterinarian and will receive appropriate care," Rickey said. "This was a situation where the intake of unwanted animals was much higher than the number of animals being adopted, and it led to horrible living conditions. We are glad to be able to provide relief."

Tunica hs donations needed!

I will be driving down to the Tunica Humane Society this weekend with a donation of two large dog houses for the 75 remaining dogs. During the freezing weather that Memphis had a few days ago, 20 dogs were adopted and several were fostered by Good Samaritans who opened up their warm homes so the dogs could have some despite from the cold.

If you would like to donate anything, I will be happy to pick it up. Sandy Williams, Director of the THS, said that they are in need of dog food, particularly the Diamond brand, as it has lots of protein in it and stays in the dogs' systems longer than other brands. I have attached a list of where Diamond dog food is sold.

Logged on this morning and found a new post under the Bad Rap Blog... it was called an American Hero, so of course I read it. WOW, is all I can say!

Jon has a dog named Demo & he is an American Pit-Bull. As an advocate against BSL, I just had to read this story! I am always grateful for those who don't judge or assume on a first meeting, like when people adopt pit bulls and know nothing about them, other than the negative things (ahem.. me!) Jon has done a great job promoting pits & getting the truth out there about them!

the dreaded trimming of the nails!!!

When Dog's nails continue to grow, trimming them can be a challenge for some dog owners. In fact, the other day a neighbor called me because her dog (a rather unruly beagle named Dewey) had a nail that grew so long that it turned back on itself and started growing into Dewey's foot. It was painful but we successfully trimmed the nail, removed it from his foot where it had grown into the skin, applied a bandage and got him started on antibiotics. Dewey is doing great. This is not an uncommon problem.

Some dogs don't like to have their nails trimmed and some owners just get so busy with life that they don't notice when the nails get long. It happens.

Here are some tips on how to make trimming your dog's nails tolerable:

1. Check your dog's nails every week or so to determine if they are getting "long". It is often easier to trim them frequently and make it a positive experience for your dog.

2. Ideally, start young. Get your dog used to touching his paws and give him positive reinforcement when he lets you massage and manipulate the paws and nails. The earlier you start clipping or grinding your dog's nails, the more used to it he will become (and the less he'll resist). Reward his good behavior when you handle and touch his paws (without trimming). Frequent trims when your dog is young will help diminish any fear.

3. Start slowly and work up to it gradually.

4. Learn the anatomy. Within the center of each toenail is the blood and nerve supply for the nail called the "quick". In clear white nails you can see the quick, a pinkish area in the middle of the nail.

5. Determine how much needs to be trimmed before you start grinding or cutting. The basic rule of thumb is that the nail, which curls downward, should be even with the paw pad. Whatever hangs over must be clipped. In the figure above - "B" is the right area to trim.

6. Get started. Some dogs will happily sit in your lap or on a table while you grind their nails but many require some form of restraint. You may want to sit on the floor with your pet, hold your pet in your lap, or have someone hold your pet on a table. If your dog has light colored nails, eyeball the quick and aim a few millimeters away from it.

7. Introduce the nail grinder to your dog. Pet him with it and make it a positive experience. You may want to do this for several sessions before ever introducing it as a nail grinder or before turning it on.

8. If you are using a nail grinder, the next step is to turn it on. Let your dog get used to the noise and vibration of it. You may also want to do this over several sessions before using it on your dog's nails.

9. After your dog is used to the trimmer or a nail grinder that has been turned on, use it to trim his nails. Grind or trim the nail below the quick on a 45-degree angle. You can do this with a standard type nail trimmer or a nail grinder.

Is your dog a chewing bandit, chomping you out of house and home? When your shoes, furniture and clothing are all fair game for your dog's teeth, it can be pretty frustrating.It's natural for dogs to chew. They explore the world through their mouths - new objects, new places & new tastes.

Chewing helps dogs relieve teething pain, tension and stress. There are also some instances where chewing could be a sign of mental or physical health issues including:

1. Boredom - chewing because there's nothing else to do
2. Poor nutrition - chewing on things to get lacking nutrients
3. Separation anxiety/feeling alone - chewing for comfort
4. Gum or tooth problems - continuously chewing on hard objects

In other instances chewing is quite normal. Dogs who chew significantly more than others are what many call "aggressive chewers". What makes a dog an aggressive chewer?
Here are some guidelines:1. Destroys an appropriately-sized rawhide in less than an hour
2. Shreds the typical vinyl toy in minutes
3. Toys quickly turn into piles of frayed and tangled threads
4. You feel you'll never get your money's worth out of a toy before it's time to throw it away

As pet owners, it is our responsibility to establish good chewing habits in our pets. Aggressive chewers will continue to chew inappropriate things until you teach them right from wrong. Be selective in what you give your dog to chew - start out by only giving your dog proper chew toys. Letting your dog chew on an old shoe teaches him that all shoes are made for chewing.

Dog owners of aggressive chewers need the toughest dog toys on the market. Tough toys allow these dogs to exercise their natural chewing instincts and train them on what to chew and not to chew. With an aggressive chewer, chances are no dog toy will last forever, but they can still benefit from a tough toy that lasts longer than most.

Charlie needs a family!

Charlie is a 2-3 year-old lab/border collie mix, male, neutered, and about 45 pounds. He is currently being treated for heart worm and will be finished by the end of February. Otherwise, he is completely healthy. Charlie is great with children and other dogs. We don’t know about cats.

Charlie was found wandering in the Summer Ave. area of Memphis and was taken to the Animal Emergency Clinic until someone could rescue him. He is currently in foster care and is anxiously awaiting his forever home.

Charlie is smart and affectionate and wants only to a part of a family where he is loved and can share his love with you. He needs a family with lots of energy and love to give.
